![]() ![]() I honestly think if you know, you know.Īlso, the reprise of the riff at 1:53, with the piano, and falsetto vocals is super cool, and again its a nice sense of familiarity without being entirely the same. I know people on first listen who immediately like his voice, and other people who on first listen, don't like it at all, and I respect that. I personally don't think his voice is an acquired taste. The guitar riff after the chorus is energetic and creative and the singing is absolutely great in my opinion, and again, a good example of using vocals to imply chords. The part at 1:53 is a perfect example of the band at its highest, cause you have a super creative drum riff, myungs bass riffs complimenting the drums, then the falsetto vocals that can only have that distinctive sound that Labrie has that lead into the chorus, and my favorite thing about that chorus riff is, they change up each instance they play it with the subtle tone differences and playing differences, it still sounds different and it feels great when youre able to spot the riff again, because 1, it was a good riff and something you'd want to hear again, and two, they don't overuse it. They're really good at that IMO, and i don't hear a lot of instances where that's done how dream theater specifically do it. My review: I like the backing vocals in this song and all over the album, something I wish they would do more, like the falsetto ones an octave higher or, (One of my favorite parts of the song) is their use of the backing vocals to imply chord tones where none would normally exist (For example, both 1:51, and 3:21 in the song.), and go together really well with the melody/riff. What are your thoughts on Strange DeJa Vu and/or Through My Words? SDJV is easily a top tier DT song for me.Īs for Through My Words It doesn't do much narratively except for further establish the link between Nicholas and Victoria - but it is a nice, melodic breather between two monster, high-energy songs. Not to mention - the ending was so good that they re-used it not just once, but two times in later songs. ![]() The middle section - starting with "Back on my feet again." through ".the missing key to unlock my mind's door" is one of my absolute favorite stretches of music from any Dream Theater song. Even though it's considerably shorter than the other two I mentioned, it still packs almost the same amount of punch. It just explodes with energy and sets up the mystery of the story brilliantly. Outside of The Glass Prison and possibly A Nightmare To Remember, SDJV is without a doubt their strongest opener. Regression is really more like the prologue instead of the first chapter, and Overture 1928 really only sets the mood for the story to come, but isn't actually part of it. I might be alone on this, but I do consider Strange DeJa Vu to be the "true" opener of Scenes.
